The Birth of Pikku-ruu

My name is Satu Kulmala, and I am a stay at home mom in my late twenties. I have two kids, ages 3 and 1.

I have used baby wraps since the birth of our first child. My first baby wraps were self made. It was very hard at first to get going, since there were no tying instructions, nor did I know anyone who could help me further. Step by step I learned, however.

The fabrics that I used were quite thick, and the knots became large and clumsy. Soon I bought my first woven wrap and learned a lot of new things. I also bought another woven wrap for my husband.

I began wondering whether stretching fabrics would allow carrying more comfortably. I started looking for a suitable product, but did not find any. So I made my first stretching baby wrap myself. I spent some time enhancing different aspects of the wrap such as length and width, and experimenting with different fabrics. My husband was also involved in this, fitting the different models for himself.

After a while I found the materials that I liked and as I believe, the perfect shape for the baby wrap. I set up a small internet shop since the more I used the wraps, the more I liked them. I believe that the wraps can bring happiness to other people too. When the price is right, it is possible to purchase wraps of different colours, to go with different style of clothing. I also hope that the small company helps me raising my children at home.

It has been two years since I founded Pikku-ruu, so it is about time to update this page. My older children are five and three, and our little girl is soon six months old.

Baby Rosa was carried in a baby already at the age of one hour. I carried her from the labour room to my room in the hospital, and she enjoyed every moment. We collected sights of appreciation when sharing a meal - Rosa breast feeding and I eating my own meal at the same time - thanks to the wrap I was using.

So far Rosa has not needed buggies at all, the wraps have been enough. Up to the age of three months, she spent most of her time in the baby wrap, but after that she has shown very much interest in her toys, playing with them on the floor. Whenever she needs to be near me, I lift her up into the wrap, and we do the chores together.
